Detox Routine

Having a consistent detox routine is important. There’s no need kill yourself through big cleanses (which, ps, they won’t help anyway) if you’re consistently supporting your body’s natural detox pathways. Small detox rituals can be especially helpful in Spring time when you’re transitioning from winter and seasonal allergen threats are high.

So, what does it mean to support your body’s natural detox pathways? When I say this I’m referring to 3 organs in the Body — kidney, liver, and skin. While our bodies are constantly bombarded by toxins from food, environment, and self care products, these guys process those toxins and eliminate them from the body. By supporting these organs, you’re allowing your body to naturally detox and rid itself of toxins.

It’s important to understand that the liver doesn’t act like a sponge that absorbs toxins. As Dr. Sarah Ballantyne (aka The Paleo Mom) explains,

this is part of the rationale behind many ‘detox diets’ that claim to clean out the liver (which is portrayed as getting gunked up with toxins from unhealthy eating and living) . . . .

In reality, the liver acts more like a self-cleaning filter than a sponge: it processes and converts toxins to water-soluble products to be excreted, but it doesn’t store them.

If your toxic load is high, your body is going to have a hard time processing toxins and this can lead to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and hormone imbalance. If you’re consistently supporting these systems, then your body will do all the work to detox naturally.

Below are the ways I incorporate consistent detox rituals into my daily routine.

I have to get creative with this. It’s still hard for me to work out consistently because of my autoimmune disease. I’m making progress, but the little I can do doesn’t lead to much sweating. That’s why I invested in a portable at home sauna! I can’t wait until we have a house and can get a legit sauna, but this little guy is great for now. I use it every single morning for 20 minutes, then it folds up and slides under the bed.

Dry Brushing

After I sauna, I dry brush. Dry brushing stimulates lymph flow, which helps get rid of toxins in the body. I put a couple drops of the Zendocrine blend essential oils on my brush for an added boost.

Filtered Water

Staying hydrated helps your kidneys do their job, and it’s important to drink filtered water. I use Berkey Water Filters with the added fluoride filter. I drink at least 60-70 ounces of water every day and add fresh lemon juice or essential oils (lemon, grapefruit, or zendocrine blend) to my water for added detoxing benefits.

Essential Oils

I’ve mentioned the Zendocrine blend twice now. It includes Tangerine Peel, Rosemary Leaf, Geranium Flower/Leaf, Juniper Berry, and Cilantro Herb essential oils and supports healthy liver function and natural detoxification. Zendocrine can be added to water, dropped onto a dry brush, and rubbed on the bottom of feet or on the upper abdomen. There are also convenient gel capsules that can be taken.

Lemon, grapefruit, and lemongrass also support detoxification (Evidence-Based Essential Oil Therapy). While lemon, peppermint, and the DigestZen blend essential oils support healthy digestion which also assists in the detox process.

Dark Leafy Greens

Spring is the best time of year to transition from heavy, comfort foods to light warm weather foods like salads made with dark leafy greens. Other liver supportive foods include dandelion tea, milk thistle, turmeric, and cruciferous vegetables.

Nontoxic Products

Don’t detox just to re-tox with the products in your home and on your skin. Choosing nontoxic products can seem overwhelming but it’s one of the most impactful changes you can make in your daily routine. Start by swapping out products you use on your skin everyday as they run out. Unsure where to find clean products? Check out the Think Dirty app to see how your products rate on the dirty scale. Whenever I’m looking for new products I go to doTERRA personal care products, or The Organic Bunny for nontoxic makeup

Avoiding Food Intolerances

This one is where you really need to know your body. Elimination diets can help to zero in on food intolerances so you know how your body responds to different foods. Keeping your gut healthy is SO IMPORTANT to the detoxification process. Those toxins need to escape somewhere!

Putting It All Together

So at this point you’re probably thinking, okay cool that all sounds great but how the heck do I fit these in with everything else going on in my life? Don’t think of these as another thing on your to do list, think of them as small daily rituals that will become habits and make up a bigger wellness routine.

Pick one (or two) that you can commit to implementing over the next week. Once you have that ritual in place, pick another one to add into the rotation. After 30-60 days of consistent implementation these rituals will become solidified in your routine and you won’t even think about them!
